Five questions to ask your architect / Designer:

  1. What does the architect see as some of the most important issue confronting Veterinarians today that design can affect?
  2. Who from the architect’s office will you be dealing with?  How do they address the various expertise needed from Veterinary business modeling to delivery of functional, cutting edge design solutions?
  3. What specific recent experience in Veterinary facility design do they bring?
  4. What is their experience/track record in successful cost estimating for similar size Veterinary projects?
  5. How long does the architect project their services to take until construction begins?

Veterinary Architects Cost More-Professional service costs will be roughly the same for similar levels of service.  Obviously, if you pay less you should expect less.  Professional services are a reflection of time spent and value delivered.

Veterinary Architects Aren’t Familiar with Local Building Codes-Most municipalities today have adopted the International Building Code, under which every Architect works.  Typically, any exceptions or deviations are readily available on-line from the municipality website or identified in our early discussions with your building officials.

How Can You Ensure I get Quality Construction?-First and foremost, our construction/permit/engineering documents are detailed, comprehensive and complete.  We also make scheduled “benchmark” on-site inspections and develop a detailed “deficiency list” which the contractor must complete prior to final payment.

I Need To Be Located Near My Architect-While this is certainly a convenience, the experience of the distant specialist is far more important to success.  Southeast Design has developed a methodical, step by step design process, with formally scheduled reviews, making certain you are included on all critical decisions, yet minimizing time away from your practice.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What payment methods do you accept?
We accept cash and checks.

Do you follow any privacy policy?
Yes. We respect your privacy, and that very much includes your personal details. Please read our Privacy Policy page for more information.

How do you structure your fees?
Our fee consists of two components: We charge an hourly fee for schematics and zoning studies. We charge a fixed fee for the balance of our work (as a percentage of the construction). The fixed fee will vary depending on the nature, scope and complexity of the project.

Do you also consult on an hourly stand-alone basis?
Yes, we do. We work on an hourly basis on several types of assignments. We help solve problems created by other architects and builders, such as fixing drawings and problem elevations. We also do prior-to-purchase design consultations for hospital and specialty facilities, scout land purchases, space planning, etc.

What are some of the common mistakes people make while hiring an architect?
People tend to overlook many things while hiring an architect. By the time they discover their mistake, it’s usually too late. Common mistakes include hiring an architect who has an adequately trained staff, a reliable track record, or someone who is a total mismatch for the project because they lack project specific skills or experience.
